Marosi easily qualified this time (he barely qualified to final in Mexican world cup) and just managed the lead in combined event (with only 15th time of the group) to be the qualifier with best score of all groups. Lombach good run in fencing was not enough to put Sweden in the final, a country with a long tradition in modern pentathlon, and Atkinson couldn't repeat his final appearence in Cairo even with a great run and shooting in combined event, where Mitsyk and Higelholt improved their positions to take a place in the final and Borrmann faced the same fate of Atkinson. Taylor also started the combined event in a good position but failed to qualify. The surprises were Xu with a good performance and clinching the 9th position and Lupi out of the top12 in the group.
